Molkerei Kalkar
near Kalkar in Germany, there once stood a dairy processing plant that was later operated by the German branch of the Dutch dairy company Friesland. The region of Niederrhein, close to the Dutch border, has long been an important agricultural area with many dairy farms, which led to the construction of several cooperative milk processing facilities during the twentieth century.
The factory in Kalkar was originally built as a regional molkerei (dairy plant) where raw milk supplied by local farmers was processed into products such as drinking milk, cream, and butter. Facilities like this formed an essential link between dairy farmers and the food industry, ensuring that milk collected from farms in the surrounding countryside could be processed and distributed efficiently.
Over time the dairy sector in Germany underwent significant consolidation. Smaller local dairies were gradually integrated into larger companies. The Kalkar dairy eventually became part of Friesland Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of the Dutch dairy company Friesland. In 2008, Friesland merged with Campina to form the international dairy cooperative Royal FrieslandCampina, one of the world’s largest dairy producers.
As the dairy industry continued to modernize, production was increasingly centralized in larger and more efficient facilities. Many smaller or older plants were therefore closed. The dairy factory in Kalkar ultimately lost its function and was shut down.
