NMBS South Storage

This former railway shed was built during the period when rail transport formed the backbone of Belgian industry. Locomotives were stored, inspected, and repaired here before hauling heavy freight trains to coal mines, steel plants, and industrial complexes.

The structure was constructed with brick walls and a steel frame, featuring high roof windows that provided natural light for the mechanics working below. Inspection pits run between the tracks, once used daily for maintenance. The site operated as part of the national railway network managed by NMBS/SNCB.

As heavy industry declined from the 1970s onward, the shed gradually lost its purpose. Maintenance activities were centralized elsewhere, and the building fell out of use. Today, it remains as a silent industrial space where rust, light, and structure reflect a time when the railways were constantly in motion.
