The Green Pool

This abandoned swimming pool lies on the edge of a medium-sized village in Italy and has been out of use for quite some time. Since maintenance stopped, the basin has gradually turned into a body of stagnant water. Due to the warm, sunny climate and the absence of chlorine and filtration, algae and plants were able to spread freely.

The bright green layer covering the surface is mainly composed of filamentous algae such as Cladophora and Spirogyra, which thrive in shallow, still water with plenty of sunlight. In some areas, cyanobacteria (commonly known as blue-green algae) are present, visible as greenish to yellow-green films. Along the edges and in the shallow parts of the pool, mosses and simple aquatic plants have taken hold, rooting themselves in the accumulated sediment on the bottom.

Scattered leaves, toys, and forgotten swimming equipment remain in the pool, reinforcing the sense of sudden abandonment. Where there was once clear water and lively activity, nature has slowly reclaimed the site, transforming the swimming pool into a small, algae-dominated ecosystem.
