Linoleumwerk Kohlmühle

Tucked away in the narrow Sebnitz valley of Saxony lies the former Likolit Linoleum Factory in Goßdorf-Kohlmühle, once one of East Germany’s key producers of floor coverings. Founded around 1901 as a paper mill, the site later became known for manufacturing linoleum, artificial leather, and eventually PVC flooring under the GDR’s state-owned VEB Likolit brand. The sprawling red-brick complex with its tall chimney, rail crossing, and yellow director’s villa formed the heart of this small industrial village. After German reunification in 1990, production ceased and the factory was abandoned, leaving behind a hauntingly quiet ensemble of buildings surrounded by forested hills, where the hum of machinery has long since faded.
