Kelenföld Power Station
On the outskirts of Budapest stands the impressive Kelenföld Power Station, a former coal-fired plant built between 1912 and 1914. Once responsible for over 60% of the city’s district heating and a significant share of Hungary’s electricity, it was a symbol of industrial progress. Its crown jewel is the iconic Art Deco control room, completed in the 1920s, featuring a glass dome and vintage switchboards a rare blend of engineering and elegance.
Though parts of the plant remain operational, the historic section was shut down in 2005. Since then, it has become a favorite destination for urban explorers and filmmakers, drawn by its haunting atmosphere and preserved industrial charm. Today, Kelenföld stands as a protected monument and a quiet reminder of Hungary’s industrial golden age.
