Zeche Neyschacht

Deep within an old mining region of Saarland lies Zeche Neyschacht, a silent witness to two centuries of coal mining history. First established in 1826, the shaft was one of the earliest deep mining projects in the area initially built for ventilation, later also used for transporting workers and materials.

Technologically ahead of its time, Neyschacht was equipped in 1927 with a fully electric hoisting machine an innovation for its era. This French-built system, later converted to a Koepe-style configuration, remains one of the oldest preserved electric hoists in Saarland’s mining heritage.

For more than 150 years, the shaft served the surrounding coal complexes until 2012, when all mining operations in the region officially ceased. Neyschacht fell silent, marking the end of an important chapter in industrial history.

Today, the shaft stands as an industrial monument, with preserved buildings and equipment that offer a powerful reminder of the technological progress and hard labor that once defined the Saarland coal industry.
