Stara Kopalnia w Wałbrzychu
In the heart of the Polish city of Wałbrzych stands an impressive industrial site: Stara Kopalnia, or the “Old Mine.” This was once one of the most important coal mines in the Lower Silesia region, an area that played a big role in Poland’s coal industry. Every day, thousands of miners went deep underground here to dig for coal that powered the country’s factories and homes.
The mine closed in 1996, and for a while, it seemed like the site would be forgotten. But instead of letting it fall apart, the city decided to save it. After a large renovation, Stara Kopalnia reopened in 2014 as a modern museum for science, art, and industrial history.
Today, visitors can explore the original mine buildings, see old machines, and even go into the underground tunnels wearing a helmet and lamp. Guides share stories about life in the mine. There are also art exhibits, cultural events, and workshops.
The old mine is now a living museum. It keeps the strong, industrial feeling of the past, while also showing new culture and creativity. A special place where Poland’s mining history is remembered with pride.
