In a quiet village in Saxony-Anhalt lies a forgotten chapter of Germany’s mining history. At the edge of the settlement once stood an impressive potash mine, which in the early 20th century formed part of the large mining complexes “Unstrut” and “Georg.” The shafts reached depths of over 500 meters and remained underground-connected to other mines in the region until 1990.

Today, the mine shafts have been completely decommissioned and filled in. Above ground, only brass-marked shaft covers serve as a reminder of this industrial era. The rest of the structures have vanished, and nature has gradually reclaimed the area. The site is now part of a so-called Geopfad a geological trail that guides visitors along remnants of mining activity, sealed shafts, old quarries, and geological landmarks.
