Zeche Ibbenbüren – Nordschacht (Zum Nordschacht 95)

The Nordschacht at Zum Nordschacht 95 in Mettingen was one of Germany’s most important coal shafts. Construction started in 1953, and by 1957, coal was reached. Between 1986 and 1988, the shaft was deepened to 1,545 meters, making it the deepest coal shaft in Europe at the time.

From the late 1970s, Nordschacht became the main shaft for transporting workers and materials. It had a large tower, dressing rooms, a lamp room, sorting systems, and its own gas-powered energy plant. It replaced older shafts and became the heart of the mine.

On August 17, 2018, the last coal in Germany was brought to the surface here. The shaft was filled with concrete in 2020, and all mining activities were shut down by 2021
