Warmtekrachtcentrale Aalst
Located along the banks of the Dender, this former power station played a key role in Aalst’s energy supply throughout the 20th century. Originally built as a coal-fired steam power plant, it generated electricity while also distributing steam and hot water through an extensive district-heating network serving homes, public buildings, and local industry.
As the installations became technologically outdated, operations were gradually reduced. Around 2006, energy production was permanently shut down. While the machinery was taken out of service, parts of the structure were preserved due to their industrial-heritage value. Today, the site forms part of a redeveloped urban zone, where the industrial character of the former power plant remains clearly visible.
