From Synagogue to Swimming Pool
The building in Poznań was constructed in 1907 as the New Synagogue, serving as a central place of worship for the city’s Jewish community. Its monumental interior and dome reflected its religious and social importance.
After the German occupation of Poland in 1939, the synagogue was desecrated. The interior was stripped of all religious elements, the dome was removed, and the building was deliberately converted into a swimming pool and sports facility by the Nazi authorities. This use continued for decades after the war.
Today, the pool is empty and the building stands closed. The remaining structure still reveals its original scale, while the wartime alterations remain clearly visible. Now protected as a historical monument, the site represents a lasting example of forced transformation and cultural loss.
