Schaufelradbagger 1125
The Schaufelradbagger 1125 was built by the German manufacturer Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft (LMG), a producer of heavy mining and conveying equipment during the 20th century. This type of bucket-wheel excavator was designed for the continuous extraction of sand, gravel, clay, and lignite in open-pit mining operations.
Unlike conventional excavators, the 1125 operated continuously. The rotating bucket wheel at the front cut into the material, which was then transported away via internal and external conveyor belts. The machine was mounted on a central slewing platform, allowing it to rotate and systematically work through an entire extraction area in segments. It was electrically powered and connected to a fixed external power supply.
LMG supplied these medium-sized machines not only within Germany but also to sites abroad, including quarries in Italy. There they were used primarily for regional sand and clay extraction. When many of these quarries closed during the 1980s and 1990s, dismantling the machines often proved more expensive than their scrap value, which is why some installations were simply left in place.
