Saint-Albert Coal Mine

The Saint-Albert coal mine, part of the Charbonnages de Ressaix, underwent major modernization in the 1950s. In an effort to increase efficiency, several smaller nearby mines were merged into the Société Anonyme Charbonnages du Centre. New infrastructure was developed, including a modern coal washing plant – known as the Lavoir du Centre – and a concrete production shaft. A central power facility was also constructed to support operations.

Production rose significantly during this period of renewal. Nevertheless, the efforts were not enough to ensure long-term survival: the mine was permanently closed in 1969.
