Kokkinogia Mine Mitsero

The Kokkinogia Mine, located near the village of Mitsero in the Nicosia District, was opened in the 1950s for the extraction of copper- and sulfur-bearing ore (mainly chalcopyrite and pyrite).
Modern mining operations peaked between 1973 and 1979, producing approximately 475,000 tons of ore with an average copper content of 3.7%.

Due to declining copper prices and reduced profitability, the mine was closed in 1979. Since then, the site has been abandoned, marked by rusted structures, collapsed buildings, and the distinctive red-orange coloration of oxidized minerals.

Today, Kokkinogia stands as an industrial heritage site and a silent reminder of Cyprus’s long mining history.
