Grube / Zeche Schacht Merlebach Nord

Schacht Merlebach Nord, also known as Puits Cuvelette Nord, is located near St. Nikolaus on the German-French border. The shaft was constructed between 1948 and 1950 as part of the larger Grube Merlebach mining complex, operated by the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine. With a depth of over 1,000 meters, it served first as a ventilation shaft and later as a production shaft.

Today, the impressive metal headframe still stands, along with the engine house and transformer building well-preserved relics of post-war coal mining. Though the mine has long been closed, the site is now partially used for telecommunications and may be repurposed for solar energy. Together with its French counterpart at Cuvelette, Schacht Merlebach Nord forms a rare cross-border monument to the mining history of the Warndt region.
