Abandoned Locomotives of Portugal
On the edge of an old railway yard, three forgotten steam locomotives slowly rust away beneath the Portuguese sun. Once, they hauled heavy freight trains loaded with coal, timber, and agricultural goods across the hilly landscapes of the country. For decades, these machines were the beating heart of regional rail transport, surrounded daily by steam, heat, and the sound of steel on steel.
When modern diesel and electric locomotives replaced them, the engines were taken out of service. Instead of being scrapped, they were left behind on a remote stretch of track, as if time itself had stopped there. Rain, sea air, and years of neglect transformed the metal into deep layers of rust, while graffiti slowly covered the last remains of their original paint.
Today, the locomotives stand as silent reminders of an era when railways played a vital role in Portugal’s industrial growth. Surrounded by overgrown tracks and fading infrastructure, they create a powerful yet melancholic scene of forgotten industrial heritage.
