Papierfabrik E. Holtzmann & Cie
The paper mill of E. Holtzmann & Cie. near Langenbrand was part of a large paper industry that developed along the Murg valley in the Black Forest. The company was founded in 1873 by Emil Holtzmann and eventually became one of the most important paper producers in southern Germany.
Several production facilities were built along the Murg, including factories in Weisenbach, Forbach and Langenbrand. The river played a crucial role in the production process, providing water for papermaking as well as energy through water-powered turbines. The mills mainly produced printing and writing paper for the graphic industry.
During the 20th century the company repeatedly modernized its facilities and employed thousands of workers in the Murgtal region. However, changes in the international paper market and economic difficulties eventually affected the company. In 1995 the Holtzmann group went bankrupt and production at several sites was stopped or sold.
In the following years the remaining activities in the Murgtal gradually disappeared and parts of the former industrial complex were demolished. Today only a few buildings and remnants of the former power and water installations remain, recalling the period when the paper industry dominated the valley.
