Elektriciteitscentrale Gelderland

The Gelderland Power Station in Nijmegen was built between 1976 and 1982 and became one of the most important power plants in the Netherlands. The facility was primarily coal-fired and supplied electricity to hundreds of thousands of households. Its 155-meter-tall chimney dominated the skyline and became a well-known landmark in the Gelderland region.

Over the years, the plant was modernized with advanced emission control systems to reduce air pollution. Despite these upgrades, the Dutch government decided to phase out several older coal-fired power stations as part of its environmental and energy policies. On 23 December 2015, the Gelderland Power Station generated electricity for the last time, bringing more than 33 years of operation to an end.

Following its closure, the site underwent a lengthy decommissioning process. The iconic chimney was demolished in a controlled explosion on 5 March 2022, and the remaining structures were dismantled shortly afterwards. Today, the power station has completely disappeared, and the site is being redeveloped for new energy and industrial activities, marking the end of an important chapter in Dutch industrial history.
