Centrale des Awirs
ENGIE Electrabel – Centrale des Awirs
Located in Flémalle near Liège, the Centrale des Awirs was for decades one of ENGIE Electrabel’s key power plants. Originally built in the 1950s as a coal-fired facility, it was later partly converted to run on biomass. In 2005, one of its units was transformed to operate entirely on biomass making it the first of its kind in the world at the time.
After many years of service, the plant was permanently shut down in August 2020. Full dismantling took place between 2021 and the end of 2023. In its place, ENGIE began construction of a new state-of-the-art gas-fired power station. This combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025. With a capacity of 875 megawatts, it will be able to supply electricity to approximately one million Belgian households.
This new facility represents a crucial step in Belgium’s energy transition offering a highly efficient and flexible backup to renewable sources and helping ensure the country’s energy security in the years to come.
