Hospital Cathedrale Anno 1702
This chapel originated as part of a hospital founded in the early 17th century, at a time when medical care and religious life were closely intertwined. The chapel served patients, staff, and religious communities and was never a parish church, but a functional space within the healthcare institution.
At the end of the 19th century, the hospital was completely rebuilt, and a new chapel was constructed as part of this renewal. Completed in the 1890s, it was designed in a restrained, classical style, emphasizing calm and reflection rather than monumentality.
The chapel remained in use for as long as the hospital functioned. From the 1960s and 1970s, medical activities were gradually phased out and eventually ceased altogether. With the disappearance of the hospital, the chapel lost its purpose. When most of the complex was demolished in the late 20th century, the chapel remained as one of the few surviving structures.
Today, it no longer serves a medical or religious role, standing instead as a quiet reminder of a period when care, faith, and everyday life were inseparably connected.
