Mission to Mars / Gewächshäuser der Zukunft

Gewächshäuser der Zukunft was a unique greenhouse complex located in Müschpark, Aachen, Germany. Built in 1987, the project was created as part of a social employment initiative, providing practical horticultural training for long-term unemployed people. The greenhouses were used to cultivate flowers, ornamental plants, and various crops for both commercial and educational purposes.

The complex consisted of 24 interconnected geodesic glass domes, giving it a distinctive and futuristic appearance. Each greenhouse was equipped with heated growing tables, an irrigation system, and automated ventilation to provide optimal growing conditions throughout the year. The modular design allowed the individual domes to be linked together into one large and highly efficient greenhouse facility.

After the horticultural project came to an end, the greenhouses were no longer used and gradually fell into disuse. Although the structures remained largely intact for many years, no new purpose was found for the site. In 2019, the iconic glass domes were carefully dismantled and relocated to the botanical gardens in Kommern, where they were reconstructed and given a new life.
