Radio Optical Observatory ROT-54
High on the slopes of Mount Aragats in Armenia stands the impressive ROT-54 Radio Optical Observatory, also known as the Herouni Radio-Optical Telescope. The observatory was designed by Armenian radio physicist Paris Herouni and constructed between 1975 and 1985 during the Soviet era. The complex officially entered service in 1986.
At the heart of the observatory is a massive fixed radio dish measuring 54 meters in diameter, built from thousands of individual panels. Its innovative design combined radio astronomy with optical observations, making ROT-54 one of the most advanced astronomical instruments in the Soviet Union. Scientists used the telescope to study radio signals from space and a variety of astronomical phenomena.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenia faced severe economic difficulties, and the observatory gradually saw less use. Although efforts were made to modernize the facility during the 1990s and 2000s, the complex eventually fell out of operation. Today, many of its buildings stand abandoned, while the enormous telescope still dominates the surrounding mountain landscape.
