The Church of the Red Gospel

Hidden in the old streets of Tbilisi stands the abandoned ruin known as the “Red Gospel Church.” The unofficial name likely comes from the reddish stone and brick used in the structure and its Christian origins.

The church is believed to have belonged to Tbilisi’s historic Armenian community, which built many churches across the city during the 19th century. Its remaining architecture still shows elements typical of Armenian religious design, including thick stone walls and tall narrow windows.

During the Soviet period, many churches in Tbilisi were closed or abandoned as religious activity was restricted. Over time, neglect and harsh weather caused large parts of the building to collapse, leaving only ruins behind.

Today, the remains of the church stand as a reminder of the Armenian heritage and multicultural history that once shaped old Tbilisi.
