Former Katjes candy factory

The former Katjes candy factory located on Wassenbergstraße in Emmerich am Rhein, Germany was once part of the production network of the well-known German confectionery brand Katjes.

Katjes was founded in 1950 by Klaus Fassin in the nearby town of Emmerich am Rhein, close to the Dutch border. The company initially produced traditional licorice sweets and quickly grew into one of Germany’s best-known candy manufacturers. During the post-war economic boom, production facilities were expanded in and around Emmerich to meet the increasing demand for sweets.

The factory on Wassenbergstraße served as one of the industrial production and processing sites connected to the Katjes operations in the city. In these buildings various confectionery products were produced or prepared for packaging and distribution. Over the decades Katjes became especially famous for its licorice and fruit gummy candies, which were exported to many European countries.

In the late 20th and early 21st century the company gradually modernized and centralized its production. Manufacturing was increasingly concentrated in newer and larger factories, particularly in locations such as Potsdam and other modern facilities. As a result, some of the older industrial buildings in Emmerich lost their original function.
