Kraftwerk Elverlingsen
The Kraftwerk Elverlingsen was a coal-fired power plant located near the town of Werdohl in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The plant was operated by WFA – Westfälische Fernwärmeversorgung GmbH and for many decades played an important role in supplying electricity to the Sauerland region.
The first parts of the power station were constructed in the early 20th century, during a period of rapid industrial growth in western Germany. Its location along the Lenne River allowed large amounts of cooling water to be used in the energy production process, while nearby railway connections made it possible to transport coal directly to the plant.
Over the following decades the facility was expanded several times with additional boilers, turbines and generators to increase its generating capacity. The electricity produced supplied both industrial companies and households in the surrounding region. In later years the plant was adapted for combined heat and power production, allowing it to provide district heating in addition to electricity.
Due to stricter environmental regulations, aging infrastructure and changes in the energy market, the power station eventually became economically unviable. In 2014, Kraftwerk Elverlingsen was permanently shut down, bringing nearly a century of power generation in the Lenne valley to an end.
