Energiecentrale Centrale Langerlo
The Langerlo Power Plant was a large electricity generating station located in the city of Genk in the Belgian province of Limburg (Belgium). The plant was constructed in the early 1960s and officially entered service in 1963.
Originally, the facility operated on coal, which was widely available due to the nearby coal mines in the Limburg mining region. The plant was strategically built along the Albert Canal, allowing coal to be transported efficiently by ship.
With a generating capacity of approximately 556 megawatts, the power station supplied electricity to a significant part of Belgium for decades. The complex consisted of large turbine halls, boiler installations, and two prominent cooling towers that dominated the industrial skyline of Genk.
Due to stricter environmental regulations and the gradual decline of coal-fired power plants in Europe, the station was closed in 2016. Plans were later proposed to convert the facility into a biomass power plant, but these plans were eventually abandoned. The site was later dismantled, and in 2024 the iconic cooling towers were demolished in a controlled explosion.
