Ex Distilleria Vinal
The factory that is now abandoned was once a large industrial distillery where alcohol was produced from by-products of the wine industry. In the surrounding region, wine production had been an important activity for a long time. Residues such as grape skins, must, and other by-products were transported to the factory where they were further processed.
Inside the facility, these materials were distilled to produce different types of alcohol. The alcohol was used for industrial purposes, denatured alcohol, and sometimes as a base product for the beverage industry. Because of the large amount of wine production in the surrounding area, the factory was able to operate on a large scale for many years and provided employment for many people.
The industrial site consisted of several large production halls, storage buildings, tanks, and chimneys. The complex was well connected by both rail and road, which made it easy to transport raw materials and finished products.
At the beginning of the 21st century, production gradually came to a halt, and in 2006 the factory closed its doors permanently. After the closure, much of the site was left behind with old installations and chemical residues that had been used during production.
Because hazardous materials such as chemical waste and asbestos were present, the area was later classified as a contaminated industrial site. Authorities had to develop plans to clean up and secure the location.
