Zendstation Bruxelles
Located on the outskirts of Bruxelles, the Centre d’émission de Wavre is one of Belgium’s most important broadcast transmission sites. Established in the mid-20th century, the facility became a key node in the country’s radio and television infrastructure.
The site was developed during the 1950s to support the rapid expansion of radio and television broadcasting. Its elevated position allowed wide coverage across central Belgium, including Brussels and Walloon Brabant. Over time, the complex expanded with multiple antennas and tall transmission masts.
The most prominent structure on the site is a transmission mast exceeding 200 metres in height. It has been used for FM radio, television broadcasting, and later digital radio (DAB+). For many decades, the site also played a significant role in medium-wave (AM) broadcasting. These AM transmissions continued until the end of 2018, after which they were permanently discontinued.
Closely associated with the French-speaking public broadcaster RTBF, the Centre d’émission de Wavre served for decades as one of its primary transmission hubs. As broadcasting technology evolved, the site gradually transitioned from analogue systems to digital transmission, while remaining operational and strategically important.
Today, the facility continues to operate for FM radio, DAB+ and digital television. Although parts of the older infrastructure are no longer in use, the site remains a distinctive landmark a silent witness to the technological evolution of mass communication in Belgium.
