Zeche Auguste Victoria – Shaft 8

In the northern part of Marl, near Lippramsdorf (between Marl and Haltern am See), lies the site of Shaft 8 of the former coal mine Zeche Auguste Victoria. This shaft was sunk in 1963 as a ventilation shaft and later, in 1978, converted into a transport and personnel shaft reaching a depth of about 1,330 meters.

Shaft 8 was part of the mine’s final expansion phase, which remained in operation until 2015, making it one of the last active coal mines in the Ruhr area. After closure, the shaft was backfilled in 2017, and the demolition of the surface facilities began.

Today, only the striking steel headframe remains a powerful symbol of the Ruhr region’s mining heritage.
