MiG-21 Graveyard
Just outside the Pápa Air Base, along Vaszari út in Hungary, a row of retired MiG-21 fighter jets once stood silently in the grass. These aircraft, formerly operated by the Hungarian Air Force’s 47th Fighter Regiment, were decommissioned after the Cold War and lined up along a former taxiway next to the base.
What remained was a striking scene: weathered jet fuselages and fading Soviet markings, quietly echoing a bygone era. Although the area is no longer freely accessible, it remains a legendary site in Cold War aviation history and a powerful symbol of Hungary’s military past.
