Terra de Salsis – The Pumping Station of Salsominore

On the outskirts of Salsomaggiore Terme lie the remains of a remarkable piece of industrial heritage: the old pumping station of Salsominore. Around 1900, this site used the then-revolutionary “gas lift” technique to extract mineral-rich salsobromo-iodine water from deep underground. Methane gas was injected to push the water to the surface, where it was used for salt production and later in therapeutic treatments.

The station was part of a larger network of over two hundred artesian wells, including the famous “Triumph Well,” which even yielded crude oil. Today, the site is a stop along the Terra de Salsis heritage route, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich salt and thermal spa history.
