Bergarbeiterkrankenhaus der SDAG Wismut

In 1953, the uranium company SDAG Wismut opened a remarkable hospital, specifically intended for its miners. It offered an unprecedented level of comfort for the time, with private bathrooms, a sauna, a swimming pool, and even a dance hall. This facility was part of an extensive network of medical services that Wismut itself organized across the mining regions.

The hospital symbolized the company’s caring approach: the health of its employees was paramount. Unlike the often austere state hospitals, this institution provided modern medical care in a comfortable setting. After German reunification, the buildings were repurposed, but the memory of this exceptional model of care lives on as an example of progressive occupational healthcare in the former GDR/DDR.
