Iron Prison
In the heart of Portugal stands a remarkable and historic building known as the Iron Prison. Constructed between 1879 and 1890, this imposing military prison is one of the finest examples of iron architecture in the region. It was designed with a star-shaped layout, with wings radiating symmetrically from a central hub a concept used at the time to ensure optimal control and surveillance within prison facilities.
Originally serving as a military prison for over a century, the building was closed in 2006 and officially decommissioned in 2009. Since then, the monumental structure fell into disrepair.
